Heroes
To zeros
We are in some way a reflection of the stories we tell.
Our heroes were people who took a stand for truth, justice, fair play even when doing so put themselves in harms way.
In the 1970s The Godfather became a hit. In the 1980s Regan claimed “the scariest worlds are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help you.’”
And now here we are. Grifters and con men became our role models.
Racism and misogyny have been mainstreamed.
And yet I believe that we the people know better. We know that somehow this isn’t who we are and that when we do better we all do better. It is hard to admit when we have been conned. It hurts. But it is the first step toward healing.
We can change the narrative and demand that our leaders and ourselves demonstrate real character (which can include redemption.) We must.
